Fire Lookout Orientation

  • Idyllwild Forest Service Ranger Station 54270 Pine Crest Avenue Idyllwild-Pine Cove, CA, 92549 United States (map)

Orientation training for new FSVA Fire Lookout volunteers.

The first 3-hour session introduces new volunteers to the expectations of the FSVA and becoming a fire lookout. The class helps them decide if being a Fire Lookout Volunteer is something they wish to continue to pursue and which tower(s) they would like to staff.

The second 3-hour session session covers both Natural History and Interpretation. Here, they learn about the ecosystem of the mountains and resources they can use to expand their knowledge of the natural and cultural history of the BDF. They also learn how to educate the public by engaging visitors in conversation, giving impromptu learning sessions, and enlisting children to be Smokey Bear Helpers.
